The
Chilcotin region stretches from the Coast Mountains and Tweedsmuir Park to
the Fraser Canyon in the interior. The region features long turquoise lakes; the wilderness portion of the Fraser Canyon; old growth interior Douglas fir forests; grasslands; the highest peaks in BC's coast mountains (over 13,000 feet); exceptional populations of woodland caribou, California big horn, grizzly, cougars, wolves; and 9 of BC's 14 biogeoclimatic zones.
12 % of this region has been protected, including Tweedsmuir, Ts-yl'os and
Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Parks. Another 26% has been designated Special Management Zones (SMZs). This is where significant fish, wildlife, recreation and ecotourism values exist. Although logging and mining can take place in SMZs, it must not be at the cost of these other values. The task now is to ensure that the SMZs in the Chilcotins live up to their promise.
You can help!
You can help support the campaigns to protect these BC Great Spaces by sending your tax creditable donation to BC Spaces for Nature. Let us know if you want your donation to be directed towards ensuring that Special Management Zones in the Chilcotin actually protect wildlife values,
or if you would rather help win the campaign to protect the Stikine.
Other Great Spaces we have worked on include The Tatshenshini and The Stikine Watershed.
