BC Spaces for Nature - Wild Earth Award

First ever Wild Earth Award presented to WCWC's Paul George

Paul George photoPioneer BC environmentalist and Western Canada Wilderness Committee founder Paul George was celebrated this weekend as the first-ever recipient of the BC Spaces for Nature "Wild Earth Award". To be presented annually, this award honours exceptional dedication, achievement and perseverance over many years as an environmental activist.

"We need to honour those outstanding individuals who have made a profound environmental difference," said Ric Careless, BC Spaces for Nature Executive Director. "All British Columbians present and future owe so much to the courage and commitment shown by conservation campaigners."

"The Wild Earth Award is intended to honour those individuals who have proven time and again that achieving the impossible is possible, Careless continued. "Paul George as founder of the Western Canada Wilderness Committee - one of Canada's most successful grassroots conservation organizations - has played an extraordinary role in making wilderness a high profile and mainstream concern. Over the years, Paul has played a leadership role in the South Moresby, Carmanah, Tatshenshini, Clayoquot and Stoltmann wilderness campaigns among so many others.

"Paul and his partner Adriane Carr have inspired so many British Columbians to save the wild Earth. Their publicizing of wilderness through WCWC's tabloids, calendars, posters and books has contributed to countless wins for the wild. I feel privileged to know and work with Paul. I feel honoured to name him as the first recipient of the Wild Earth award and thank him for his tireless, selfless efforts in the name of wilderness."

Quipped the bearded and bear-like George, "the only other thing I ever won before this was a shaving kit," as he held up the stunning glass and wood trophy.

The award was presented before an audience of British Columbian environmentalists who were gathered for the BC Environmental Network's annual Fall Meeting, held in Langdale on Squamish Territory on the Sunshine Coast. Approximately 100 gathered to further the BCEN's mission of facilitating citizen group involvement in solutions to environmental problems so that human health remains viable, and ecological and economic sustainability prevail.
