BC Spaces for Nature staff have played a leadership role in successful
conservation campaigns spanning over 25 years which have led to the protection
of more than 5.5 million acres, in places such as:
(To see images of these areas and other successful BC Spaces conservation campaigns,

show. For more information on these campaigns see the book To
Save the Wild Earth.)
More recently we led the effort to protect one of the foremost grassland areas
in all of BC; the Empire Valley Ranch. As well, this year we were successful
in getting the BC government to implement a land use plan that protects a further
600,000 hectares (1.5 million acres) in the central interior region of the province.
BC Spaces for Nature has for many years worked in close association with our
province's lead conservation organizations. In the early 1970s Ric Careless,
now BC Spaces Executive Director, co-founded the Sierra
Club of B.C. which continues to play a key role in conservation issues in
British Columbia today.
In the early 1990s (as Tatshenshini
Wild) we established the largest continental wilderness campaign network
ever, Tatshenshini International, which linked together the 50 lead conservation
organizations in North America (including such lead Canadian organizations as the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Western Canada Wilderness Committee, World Wildlife Fund, Sierra Club Canada, and Sierra Legal Defence Fund, and in the U.S., American Rivers, The Wilderness Society, Sierra Club, and National Audubon). In all these organizations represented 10 million members united in their desire to protect the heartland of the largest protected area on the planet. This campaign culminated successfully in 1993, when the 1 million hectare (2.5 million acre) Tatshenshini-Alsek Wilderness Park was designated.
In 1992 BC Spaces founded the Environmental Mining Council of BC (EMCBC) to ensure that BC's conservation movement could properly address mining issues. The EMCBC thrives today as an independent leading-edge organization.
